Other views: if Lombardi trades for Nash, THEN he should be fired
I just love this so much.
Kings Gameday: Stop Trying To Fire Dean Lombardi - Battle of California
Honestly, I get why a lot of people want to fire Dean Lombardi: it's because they're giant babies who are upset because they honestly thought making the playoffs is easy. They already fired Murray and that didn't change anything so now they want Dean gone. I get it. All I'm saying is that it's not Dean Lombardi's fault that you're a baby. Maybe you should go to counseling or something, I dunno. Or maybe you should stop spouting off about "the system!!!" because you don't really know what it is and you're only saying it because it makes you sound smart without actually being smart. Or maybe it's because deep down [you] don't want to admit it's the players [you've] liked [...] [who] are the problem this season. Or maybe, just maybe, you can't accept the fact that sometimes... shit happens? And that you don't fire one of maybe 10 guys in the NHL that actually knows what he's doing because of it[.]
Or maybe just go stand over there, that would probably be best. Thanks!
Some people may want Dean gone unless he trades for Nash but me personally, I'm going the other way: the only reason Dean Lombardi should be fired is if he trades for Rick Nash. Trading for Rick Nash means that he killed the Kings' cap room and depth in a desperate attempt to make a "splash" and save his job. That's a fireable offense.

thank you for this… this has been my argument, literally with all my buddies… the funny thing is, majority of the people who have said this have NEVER played a freakin game at any organized level in their lives, and they are so quick to place blame on everyone other than the players. they all say EXACTLY, what you have mentioned, and i have, in other words, said the same things you have said in this blog. Once again Thanks!! i have shared this link with atleast 30 nay sayers!!

Is it me, or do I see tons and tons and tons of blame being directed at players?
I don’t want Lombardi fired either, but it seems to me the blame is flying in all directions. And with scoring so low it probably should be.

Well they should get some, don’t you think, being they’re the guys who can’t actually score?
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
Yes, just as I think the GM and coaches should as well, since everyone has a hand in it.
But seriously, I see like two Kopitar hate threads a day this week, and the billionth trade the captain proposal, so I don’t get that there’s a massive blame imbalance.

That doesn’t look like I’m saying the players are blameless

The only point I disagree with is that firing Murray did "nothing".
It brough Darryl Sutter’s press conferences into our lives, which is allegedly better than anything anyone has done ever.

If you haven’t seen it, you simply must watch the press conference with Darryl Sutter introducing Jay Bouwmeester to the Flames. Darryl Sutter is awesomely ackward, and they signed the one guy in the league more awkward than him and gave them both microphones.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
Imagine a scale
On the extreme left is Defense – on the extreme right is Offense.
Many teams post lockout are leaning way to the right. Others – particularly the successful ones are in that area a little to the right side of the middle.
Dean leans as extreme left as any team’s GM does. I’m just not that convinced that with the changes in the game since the lockout that that’s a great place to reside. I could be wrong, but interestingly, for the last three years the team has had problems scoring. Big problems actually, and it’s trending down.
The GM of a team sets the direction that the team is gonna go and right now they’re last by a long ways in terms of offense.
So if he isn’t partially responsible for that, then who exactly is? I’m open to any and all suggestions.
Who's responsible?
Number 6:
I think your post was good and pointed out pretty clearly the situation with the Kings. Has the league changed and the team hasn’t?
One thing I would keep in mind is that when DL took over the team was awful, especially the defense. The idea was (I think) that stressing defense the Kings could become competitive quicker and then the natural growth of the offense would lead to a balanced team. Also, if you recall, at the time DL took over we had Kopi, Brown and Frolov who were supposed to lead this offense. Maturity and growth of that group plus additions would take the offense where it needed to go.
Unfortunately, that trio has not taken the anticipated steps—-Kopi is basically a point a game player, Brown has been up and down, and Fro is out. While Kopi has improved his overall game, his offense is inconsistent at best, and he has not increased his productivity.
The failure (I don’t know if it is DL or the city or the organization) to land the prime free agent has inhibited the offense too.
I guess my point is that DL made the assumption that the offense would be better than what we have seen the past few years, and I would imagine that most of us would have made that assumption as well. It is dramatically evident this year, when so many support players have not produced. Every player on this team has under-performed offensively and I doubt any of us would have predicted that.
Should we blame DL for making assumptions that were reasonable even though they did not occur?
Had the offense produced a goal a game more, I doubt we would be seeing the criticism of DL. I think the components are there but the production was not.
We all have our gripes about system, or defense-first, or how TM handled player X, Y or Z. But, I don’t know that the inability of DL to see into the future is reason enough for him to be replaced.
Personally, as a long-time fan, I hate to think of another restart or rebuild. A couple good moves and this team is closer than most think re the negativity.
I love DL but if the Kings don’t make the playoffs, firing him is justifiable IMO, barring major, extended injuries like Kopitar last year. Gagne’s injury hurts, but isn’t enough make the Kings an non-playoff team.
Trading for Nash is only a fireable offense if DL gives up a ton to get him. That is open to interpretation but if it involves a package of Johnson and Bernier, IMO that’s too much.

How else would you get Nash? The Blue Jackets don’t have to trade him. It’s not as though he is a free agent this summer and he’s refused to sign. They can ask for whatever they want and refuse to trade him for anything less than the moon.
I guess Lombardi could try taking Howson out for drinks and get him nice and loaded before offering Penner and Stoll straight up. But somehow I think the Jackets could protest that when he sobered up.
I guess what I mean to says don’t make the Nash trade if it involved Bernier and Johnson. Personally, I’d offer Brown, Bernier, and Voynov or another defenseman in the system. Probably not enough but it’s as far as I’d go personally.
Wait, instead of Bernier and Johnson you would give them Bernier, Voynov, and Brown? You do realize that Voynov > Johnson, right? Your suggestion sends considerably more their way than that which you denigrate as too much.
You do realize that Voynov > Johnson, right?
No, I don’t think so. If this was true, Voynov would be up with the team right now, easily replacing Martinez/Drewiske. And weren’t you the same guy that said Quincey would be the Kings best defenseman right now? LOL
So by the same token, everyone on the Monarchs was worse than Hunter/Moreau for most of the year? Pokin’ holes in yer logic.
VV was sent down because DL wanted some roster space and he was the defenseman who could move back and forth without hitting waivers. And also because DL is a gotdamn moron.
So by the same token, everyone on the Monarchs was worse than Hunter/Moreau for most of the year? Pokin’ holes in yer logic.
Moreau and Hunter both got placed on waivers, logically.
After a 1/3 and 1/2 of the season, respectively. Your argument sucks, basically. The point is that you don’t analyze a player based on where the GM decides to put him, especially when that GM kept those two unskilled old junkers on our team for so long.
You analyze him by watching him play. He is pretty much as good as JJ, he’s younger, he’s cheaper, has more upside, and doesn’t make bonehead plays on defense every night. And if you trade him now, before the league has had a good look at him, you will be trading him at his low value point, which doesn’t make sense.
It makes more sense to trade JJ, because he is a higher profile player, makes more, and other teams may not really know how bad he is defensively. He skates pretty.
Loved this post!
This post says exactly what I have been thinking but way it way better than I could have.
“I’m mad/disappointed, so someone has to pay for it.”
Being a fan of a sports team does not come with a freaking guarantee. Yeah, I get frustrated too, but I know that it is part of being a fan. DL doesn’t have to get fired so I can feel better when this team struggles, or if I am upset that the Kings lost. It didn’t make me feel any better when TM got fired, in fact, I kind of felt miserable that it came to that. I think he deserved better. But, that is all part of the game.
This team has come a long way under DL and I am not a believer that things will suddenly or magically get any better if he is fired. I would rather see DL stay and finish the journey as opposed to some other GM come in and start again. I have seen far too much of that over the years.
LA Kings
I’ve been a loyal fan since the beginning, but I’ve had enough.
They can’t score, can’t defend, and can’t protect a lead. In short, they are pure crap! Darryl Sutter is ineffective, and well past his sell-by date as a coach. Dean Lombardi is a complete hockey moron: this guy acquired Penner, the biggest fraud in the league. If he and Lombardi are so keen to work together, I understand WalMart are looking for greeters. Although I’m sure they would find a way to screw that up too! Anschutz doesn’t own a professional hockey team. He has a bunch of Keystone Cops, and Stumblebums that will hopefully, for him, evolve into a useful tax write-off. Hey, maybe that’s been the plan all along?
