I just hate him because we didn't get him.
I love DD, but the Kings were the worst team the year before, and Tampa swooped in at the end to nab the most losses and scored the #1 overall draft pick. Bunch of assholes.
look on the brightside
he would probably top out at 25 goals in the Kings’ system. And in terms of being a Lannister, better make sure he doesn’t have a sister

maybe if they meant he was on the roster and had a pulse. but hey, those skates looked really sharp, and the kings couldn’t have made the playoffs without em

Interesting Fact
The day Tyler Toffoli was born, April 24, 1992, Luc Robitaille scored 2 goals and Paul Coffey logged 3 points versus the Oilers in Game 4 of the Smythe Semi-Finals.
This makes me feel very not-young.
What game did Mike Krushelnyski score that crazy goal from his stomach?
Am I remembering this right?

April 14, 1990. Overtime of game 6 vs. the Flames.

A great moment in a great run for the cup. Don’t think any video can convey the intensity of that game. Only better game was the final In the Toronto series

On 50/50 possessions, Tampa basically becomes a 1-4 team. Pretty disciplined, and will probably have to start taking some chances if the Kings can score another one.
Ok NOW you can sound the horn

Chicken dinner.
Forward momentum, indeed.

(Sigh of relief)
If we couldn’t score against the Lightning, with it’s leaky D and a sieve standing in as a goalie, we’d really be in trouble…

Offer them Bernier and Drewiske for Stamkos, Lecavalier and a 1st. Then trade Stamkos for Smyth. Throw in one or two 1st picks if needed.

So according to Hockey Night in Canada Jeff Carter’s NTC is no more (it turns out it was contigent on him remaining on the Flyers). Does this change anybody’s opinion on bringing in Carter? I would do it just because his value has to be so low right now and the contract is tradeable.
i would do it for the right price
People can talk all they want about him being a “problem” and why or why not Philly shipped him out, but the fact is that he and Richards took the Flyers to the Cup Finals, with arguably less talent than LA has now. Actually, not arguably less – definitely less.

Martinez, Hickey, Zatkoff/Jones, and a 1st.
Nothing more.

Not a good year to be caught without a first round pick. Otherwise, how about sending Michell rather then Martinez and a 3rd?
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
Good point.
Plus, I failed to realize that about 5m of salary needs to be jettisoned by the Kings in order to bring in Carter. So include Scuderi or Mitchell, include Stoll or Penner, leave in Martinez, and move that 1st down to a 3rd.

He’ll be the starter on everyone’s Chinese Menu.
Frankly, see if the team can sneak into the playoffs and out. Worry about this in the off-season…who knows, maybe we get lucky and two secondary players pick it up for the remainder of the season.
The team has lost too much time. They need to restructure (contracts) for the next two years or so before making major jumps.

And they’ll mess with his development too, if they don’t fix their defense. Better goalie coach might help as well.
It’s not just about acquiring talent, you have to give young players support.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Mason had the talent, too. He did, and it all went to shit. Half of the time people throw up their hands and say “Goaltending is so uncertain!” I think it’s because GMs don’t invest in goaltending coaches and/or make panic moves when there’s a rough patch. Or because their d-corps are shoddy. Tampa Bay wrote off Mike Smith, and the Goalie Guild saw signs he was getting back on track and predicted he’d have success in Phoenix. They were right.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Agree on the goalie coach choices.
The Ducks for years were able to take average prospects and turn them into work horses. Their Goalie coach was great, and even when that franchise had no skill players, the 1 thing you could count on year in, and year out was their goaltending.
Kings by contrast have never been able to develope their own homegrown goalies (much like it is now, but with scorers), and watched all their prize goalie prospects develope in other cities, and their high priced free agent/trade aquisitions fail miserably, till Ranford came along.
well there is an internet deal that there is a potential 3 way deal with the flyers. I could see the Flyers parting with Bobrovsky for a defenseman.
Oh I see.
Well I like picking apart rumors as thought exercises too. A three team deal is so rare nowadays.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
yeah in this case something like this does make sense to me though:
-Jack Johnson, Sanford to Flyers
-Bobrovsky, JVR to CBJ
-Jeff Carter to the Kings
I thought CBJ needed a defenseman more than they needed another LW (?). But I guess it could work if Philly is interested in JJ that much.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
What I’m trying to say is that it seems much simpler for the Kings and CBJ to do a deal on their own…but who knows what’s going on in Lombardi’s mind about Bernier.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
That idea is sooo much more fun than most of the other deals I’ve seen in HF boards/Bleacher Report rumor land. If it happened, the microstats people in Philadelphia would lose their minds over it instead of me. Heh!
Just don’t trade Voynov please Dean he’s JJ insurance…
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
About making a trade…. assuming that DL would probably be making a trade just to save his job is the only reason I can see making one.
The team is not a legit SC contender this year.
I personally wouldn’t take Carter for free. I hate that contract. I also don’t like the idea of linking him and Richards up again. Sorry, but something was clearly going on there. It’s not important what the reality was…. even if it wasn’t as big of a deal as the press made it, it still was enough to get them both sent packing.
I also don’t like the idea of trading JJ as Matt Greene won’t always be around, and JJ has a nice blend of skill and the physical game. Plus he’ll grow as a player. No way you trade Voynov, and they are nuts if they trade Bernier.
They aren’t? Then what happens if they can’t get Quick signed after the season. I assume they just carry on with Zatkoff as the starter?
He’s a legit 30 goal scorer signed for under six million. What about the contract is objectionable? The length?
Alternatively there’s free agency — the problems with finding a scorer by that route are a) insane competition for their services b) cap hit would likely be higher and c) the contract would in all likelihood be a retirement one as well.
I guess I don’t see the Kings being in a position to be so very choosy about the right fit when it comes to goals anymore. But that’s just me.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Also, re JJ
Plus he’ll grow as a player.
I haven’t seen a lot of rapid growth over the years, and he’s 25 now. The team still does much better at even strength when he’s off the ice. It has to be a concern.
One of my primary criticisms of Lombardi would be if he were unwilling to move that contract. I know they track scoring chances, so they must have seen how poorly he fared in the playoffs last year. But he’s so invested in it one day paying off.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Plus, I failed to realize that about 5m of salary needs to be jettisoned by the Kings in order to bring in Carter.
The salary would be pro-rated this year — and next year Stoll and Penner are coming off the books anyway.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Through its chump change I doubt we will be seeing Mr. Hunter next season. And sadly, Gagne may be a wrap as well.

The salary would be pro-rated this year
That’s right. Carter’s would be pro-rated. As would any salaries that go back the other way. I was just too lazy to do the math, so I used the annualized rate of 5m.

I’m too lazy to calculate it as well. I’m the kind of nerd who waits for others to do the math.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Fine
and what is the point of having been so careful about managing the cap for years …. and then now you have Quick’s new contract If they can sign him, Doughty’s, Richard’s’ and who else?
If it’s true these comments about Detroit having loads of cap space…… and DL is gonna put the Kings in a position where they’re stuck for the future wrt cap flexibility, trying to bring in a UFA, or whatever? Bad idea.
The reality as I see it, is that the Kings simply aren’t just ‘one player away’ at this point.
USHA
as usual you’re right. I mean, they already don’t have a 2nd or a 3rd. And now they’re gonna trade Another first? Pleeease.
Lombardi needs to do deep intense focused research as to what skilled forwards (wingers ideally) are out there for this upcoming draft and the following draft. I know he doesn’t get excited generally about players with great hands and a high skill set, but thats whats missing from this team.
Otherwise, why even bother trading for Mike Richards? I think it’s exceedingly clear, even w/o being at all critical that the wingers he’s been playing with haven’t been getting the results. Then you have a high class player whose capabilities are being wasted….. and he’s frustrated to boot.
I wonder what his phone conversations with his buddy Carter are like?
Mackenzie tweeted that the draft is very top heavy, not very deep, so teams might be more willing to part with their picks than normal. That said, I hope we don’t.

The scouts must have met with their teams lately if Bobby Mac said that.
I don’t know if anyone’s sussed out the conditions of our 3rd round pick going to the Oilers (maybe it was Penner playing in x number of games or scoring x number of points? Not sure how that works) but we probably need that 1st.
The draft is supposed to be better for defensemen than forwards. I think we can guess what that means for us. But LW sniper is now officially both a long term and short term need, so they better trade for some prospects sometime soon, at least.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
According to this unimpeachable resource, the Kings owed the Oilers a 2nd if they won the Cup and a 3rd if they didn’t.
Waaaait
So we were only able to trade the 2nd to Philly after we were eliminated from the playoffs in 2011? Citation from reliable sources needed, indeed!
Let’s figure out if Dean edits Wikipedia in his spare time, because I swear that’s the first time I’ve heard of that condition. I bet his handle is Coulombmastr

I think they say that every year around the trade deadline. It’s almost like certain GM’s are trying to convince other GM’s to give up draft picks…
Maybe. I do think the scouting staff evals on the types of players that would be available influenced Nashville and LA to move their first rounders. Boston didn’t care much because they had two, and kept the one in the top ten.
There’s always the possibility that there will be guys who fall due to injury or some other reason, like Couture and Saad, though.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Datsyuk Zetterberg and Lidstrom doing the heavy lifting; some cap bending help, plus a few they’re-actually-perennial-Cup-contender discounts. Voila.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
For those wondering, Z is making $7.75M, cap hit of 6.08; Franzen’s current contract, and Kronwall’s which will kick in next year are also bendy ones.
Lidstrom made major bank beforehand so that definitely falls under voluntary discount.
Suter plus Parise if Lids retires?
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Do you have a link for that info? The page I checked just said they have around 6m available.

Ohhhhhhhhhh! You said:
detroit will have 24 million under the cap available by the deadline
Which led me to believe you were referring to the next close deadline: the trade deadline. But the 24 million in cap space you are referring to appears at the 2012 Free Agency Signing period, correct?
