Question for the Kovalchukosphere

It is now widely reported by people who don't make **** up that the Devils knew Monday night the contract would be rejected and yet went ahead with the press conference.

Yes, this explains Lou's demeanor. (Does it explain Kovalchuk's? Does he know at this point?)

But it doesn't explain why they would go ahead with the conference in the first place. 

I am really at a loss on this one. What possible motivation could there be for this? Or, to put it another way, how would circumstances have to unfold (owners, GM, agent, player, league, NHLPA each have different agendas, etc.) for this to occur?
