Ontario Reign: #FancyStats 1st Half Review

New, comments

Nelson Emerson dishes on the development of Kempe, Zykov, Dowd, Gravel & other prospects + 1st half Reign scoring chance, Corsi & faceoff figures.

Lee Calkins

Here are estimated Ontario Reign even strength scoring chance, ES Corsi, and all situations faceoff counts at the halfway point of the season.

But before we get to those, Nelson Emerson, Kings Director of Player Development, was kind enough to share his thoughts about some Reign prospects.

Emerson on Justin Auger, who scored five goals in the 12 games that Michael Mersch missed:

We're now expecting a lot from him. I think last year, we were kind of like, "Wow, way to go Augsy. You had a great year. It was a little surprising." But now, we're in the position where, "Well, let's go. We expect this out of you. We expect you to be a contributor. We expect you to be a solid performer. Be a top guy for us down here. A real good prospect."

Expectations are a little higher for him now. We're going to demand that from him. I think lately, he's kind of put that upon himself and is succeeding.

Emerson on Jonny Brodzinski, who had just 14 individual even strength scoring chances in his first 17 games...and 26 such chances in his last 15:

Brods came in, a college kid who probably wasn't real familiar with the American Hockey League and how it works. I think he realized real soon, that geez, there's a lot of great players down here. Now that he's gone through the league once, I think he's really getting comfortable with the pace of the play. I think his skating has really picked up over the last three weeks. And you can see it in his game.

And I tell you, he can shoot the puck at the top level of players who can score. So it's only a matter of time, I really believe, before he gets on a roll.

Emerson on Nic Dowd, who leads all Ontario forwards with 1,032 Corsi events (following him is Sean Backman with 890):

Nic's progressed into a great player. There's nights where he's the best player on the ice for either team. So that's his challenge now: When he goes on the ice, he needs to be a leader. He needs to be not only the top player for our team, but the top player on the ice of all 40 players. A lot of nights he is. That's special...he's right there on the cusp. So now we got to get him to that next level.

Emerson on Nick Ebert, who leads most-used Reign defensemen with a 58.0 Corsi For %:

He's still got to realize that it's not a sprint. It's a process...one thing with him is game to game, he's got to stay focused. He's got to realize that he can't get out of rhythm. He's got to understand what's in front of him. Let the game play in front of him and not lose focus.

Emerson on Kevin Gravel, who has seen 1,161 Corsi events this season, the most of any Ontario player (trailing him is Vincent LoVerde at 1,059):

Gravs has been great. He's a real leader and his game is blossoming. I know he's depended on down here. His offense is really on the upswing. He's hard to play against because he's got a long reach, a long stick. He's big, he's lanky. He passes the puck at the correct speeds. As a forward, you like D that know how to pass pucks to you, make it comfortable for you.

We're going to keep talking to him about being quick to close...His strength. He needs to keep working in the weight room.

Emerson on Adrian Kempe, who has a 62.1 Corsi For % in his last nine games, after a 46.6% mark in the first quarter of the season:

He was able to be with us when this team won last year, so that really helped him. Not just winning, but getting to know the players and the coaches. He came here, and he's got a little strut to him. He knows he's expected to be a good player in this league. I think he takes it upon himself each night to make sure that that happens.

And with him [and Zykov], we're going to keep pushing them to better themselves. To be an NHL'er, to be a long-time NHL'er, it takes commitment, strength, and usually a lot of history of how the game works. That's what they're going through now.

[That strut] is just something that he has...he realizes that he's capable of doing positive things. And it's good to see. Because he's got a confidence about him.

Emerson on Zac Leslie:

Zac's finally getting in the rotation now. He's a dynamic player, he's quick. He provides offense. We don't have a lot of players like him, not only here, but even in our organization. If he can...not allow [the offensive emphasis] to affect us negatively, then he can be a real asset. We're going to continue to work on him to play his position, to play his side of the ice...everything should go from there.

Emerson on Joel Lowry:

Joel's been great. What a tough situation coming in, not playing, injury, had to wait so long to get in. I know it's tough for him the first couple games. He was almost out a whole year.

Now you've seen over the last 10 days, a lot of little things he does that make him effective. Little nuances of a player that kind of go unnoticed, that we really, really like. It going to take time. I hope he doesn't get too frustrated. He's still got to put the time in and get comfortable. He's on his way though, he sure is.

Emerson on Kurtis MacDermid, who perhaps surprisingly, is third among most-used defensemen in shot attempts per game with 2.5 (Ebert leads at 4.0, Gravel follows at 3.5):

The kid's driven. He's a kid that has maybe turned a lot of heads this year with his play. Give him credit. He's going to do whatever he can to be an NHL'er, and that's what's awesome about him. He tries as hard as he can, and he's really moved up himself in a lot of people's eyes.

I got a lot of respect for him. Never count that kid out. Cause he's just starting, he's going to get a lot better. He's...becoming a great pro in this league. He's young and determined...he's just going to continue to keep going upward.

[He has to keep working on his] movements. His passing. Not getting frustrated.

Emerson on Valentin Zykov:

Zykov, it's interesting. He's a kid, this is his first year as a professional. So I think those guys come in and they're not really sure what to expect. I think we saw that with Z. He came to training camp, and it was all new to him. It took him a little while to grasp how that all works. He came down to Ontario here, and geez, he had a heck of a start for the first couple weeks of the season. He was really on and things were really going good with him.

But then, you know, as a professional, there's peaks and valleys to a season. And that's what you're seeing with him now. He's going through a little tougher time where he's not scoring. I think as a young kid that weighs on you. We've all been through it. He's just got to work his way through it himself.
