2017 NHL Entry Draft Kings Take D Mikey Anderson 103rd Overall

The Los Angeles Kings have a wealth of defensemen — some good, some less good. At 103rd overall, they took Mikey Anderson, who was ranked 51st in the overall NHL CS Rankings per Jon Rosen.

The University of Minnesota-Duluth commit played in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks and posted 50 points in 111 games. Anderson was on the USHL All-Rookie Second Team in 2015-16 and in 2016-2017 was on the USHL Second All-Star Team per EliteProspects.com.

At 5’11, he might be considered slightly undersized but his 194lb frame will probably come in handy down the road.

According to Ryan Pike of The Hockey Writers,

There’s really nothing flashy about Anderson’s game, but he’s very poised and consistent. He’s skilled at cutting down the angles in the defensive zone, and seems to know exactly where to be to close out shooting lanes or block passes. He’s not a massive physical specimen, but he uses his size well and is able to do so without taking too many penalties in the process.

Pike also described Anderson as a 1990s era throwback defenseman, very “meat and potatoes.” He sounds like the perfect fit for this version of the Kings.

Welcome to LA, Mikey!
