A Month of Gratitude: Drew Doughty

Do you think he’d play all 60 minutes if someone let him do it?

NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Ottawa Senators Marc DesRosiers-USA TODAY Sports

A season like this is tough to watch, and we all find ourselves being pretty hard on the Los Angeles Kings as they struggle to right the ship. For the rest of November, we’ll be taking some time each day to share why we’re thankful for each player on the team (and some Kings of years past). If you’d like to share your love for a Kings player, past or present, check out our call for submissions.

Today we give thanks for the Kings’ number one defenseman...

Drew Doughty

Aside from receiving the number one pick in 1967 as the Kings were forming their team, the second pick is as high as the Kings have ever drafted. Two other times, the team found themselves with the #2 pick, selecting Doug Smith in 1981 and Jimmy Carson in 1986. While both men went on to have distinguished NHL careers, neither had the impact on his team as did the Kings’ pick in 2008.

Doughty is a one-time Norris Trophy winner, a finalist three other times. He’s been selected for the NHL All-Star Game for four seasons in a row. He routinely is among the league’s leaders in time on ice. He’s won just about everything there is to win. And now he’s pretty much set to be a King for life.

JFTC contributor Michael said he’s thankful for “Drew Doughty’s smile and passion for the game,” and passion pretty much defines Doughty on ice. Sometimes it gets the better of him — YouTube is full of clips of Doughty losing his temper — but it does make for some interesting games when he’s able to channel that passion appropriately.

So thanks to Drew for many years of on-ice highlights, playing literally all the minutes, and never giving Kings fans a single dull moment.
