Carey Price stood tall, stopping 14 shots in the third as the Kings finally awoke after sleepskating through the first 40 minutes. Price tied Jacques Plante for most career wins (314) by a Montreal Canadiens goalie in a 3-1 drubbing over the Kings on Tuesday night.
The scoring went like this:
Canadiens 1. Kings 0.
Brendan Gallagher extended his scoring streak to four games by deflecting in Victor Mete’s shot from the blueline giving Montreal a 1-0 lead 3:11 into the first period.
Canadiens 2. Kings 0.
Jordan Weal made it 2-0 at 10:07 of the second period, scoring in his Canadiens debut when Dion Phaneuf served it up to him at the right circle for the easy put back.
The last I heard from Jordan Weal, he was being run over by Arizona’s Steve Downie allowing Max Domi to score his first NHL goal in October 2015.
I knew then that Weal was not long for the Kings and apparently not many teams like poor Jordan either as he’s played for Montreal, the Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers this season. Tonight, Weal had the last laugh, scoring the eventual game winner, enabling the Canadiens to remain tied with Pittsburgh for the first Eastern Conference wild card, two points ahead of Columbus.
Canadiens 3. Kings 0.
Shea Weber made it 3-0 just 49 seconds into the third period on a one-timer from Phillip Danault for his 10th goal.
Canadiens 3. Kings 1.
Despite playing less than eight minutes in the game, Matt Luff scored his eighth goal in 32 games, denying Price from earning his 44th career shutout.
Futility Notes: Adrian Kempe, 1 goal in his last 12 games ... Tyler Toffoli, zero goals in his last 10 games ... Jeff Carter, zero goals in his last 14 games.
Next: The Kings host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
Carey Price—All Smiles:
Hey Willie...why you wanna play Matt Luff eight minutes a night and keep sending him down? I thought you were supposed to play the young guys?
“I want to show that I can play here and try to earn a spot, and not be the guy who keeps going up and down [to the AHL]. I want to be the guy who stays up and keeps producing day in and day out.” - @Matt_Luff25 pic.twitter.com/7ltDCSAvMQ— LA Kings (@LAKings) March 6, 2019
