Adrian Kempe signs three-year, $2 million AAV contract extension

Adrian Kempe, the lone remaining restricted free agent on the Kings in need of a contract, finally has a new deal.

Per the team, the 22-year old forward finalized a new deal today, agreeing to a three-year contact with an annual cap hit of $2 million. Kempe will still be a restricted free agent at the end of the contract, albeit one with arbitration rights, which he did not have at the conclusion of his entry-level contract.

Kempe’s overall stats were down in the 2018-19 season, recording a total of 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) over 81 games. He recorded 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) in the same amount of games in the 2017-18 season.

While the Swedish center can be a somewhat polarizing player, if he does manage to put all of the aspects of his game together — the speed and the hands and perhaps a bit more finish at the net — $2 million could be a steal for the Kings.

Per CapFriendly, the Kings have $6,740,606 in projected cap space, with a current roster of 23 (13 forwards, eight defensemen, two goalies). CapFriendly’s projection, however, has players like Blake Lizotte, Mario Kempe, and Kurtis MacDermid on the roster and leaves Nikolai Prokhorkin in the AHL. Those are all fairly small contracts, however; the Kings will have a significant amount of cap space available to them this season.
