Another Record-Breaking Year for the Kings?
LA is vying to be the decade's worst OT/shootout team.
Not only do the Los Angeles Kings have the worst OT/shootout record (3-15) in the NHL this year...they have the worst OT/SO winning % since 2005-06, when the league adopted the shootout. That's out of 300 possible teams!
In that time, 23 squads have shanked their way to a sub-.300 OT/SO winning % (playoffs in bold):
Year | Team | OT/SO W | OT/SO L | Win % |
2007-08 | COLUMBUS | 5 | 12 | 0.294 |
2011-12 | ANAHEIM | 5 | 12 | 0.294 |
2013-14 | NASHVILLE | 5 | 12 | 0.294 |
2010-11 | OTTAWA | 4 | 10 | 0.286 |
2012-13 | TORONTO | 2 | 5 | 0.286 |

2010-11 | EDMONTON | 4 | 12 | 0.250 |
2006-07 | FLORIDA | 5 | 16 | 0.238 |
2011-12 | CALGARY | 5 | 16 | 0.238 |
2007-08 | ST LOUIS | 4 | 13 | 0.235 |
2012-13 | NEW JERSEY | 3 | 10 | 0.231 |
2008-09 | TAMPA BAY | 5 | 18 | 0.217 |
2010-11 | BOSTON | 3 | 11 | 0.214 |
2011-12 | CAROLINA | 4 | 16 | 0.200 |
2014-15 | LOS ANGELES | 3 | 15 | 0.167 |
From the '11 champs to the dregs of the shootout era, the 2014-15 Kings are among some decidedly mixed company, whether their season finishes with an early tee time or polish on a third Cup.
Don’t blame OT/shootout record if #LAKings miss playoffs. Bottom line would be not playing well enough to win in regulation enough times.

LRT: LA's 3-14 OT record is pretty spectacular. Everyone else has at least 6 OT wins. #randomness #notindicativeofteamqualityorheart

If LA misses the playoffs despite being the league's best Corsi team that shot a decent % and got decent goaltending, well, that's why.

You'll be shocked, shocked to find that OT/SO success can help punch your postseason ticket! Since 2005-06, 11 of the 16 teams in the .700-plus OT/SO winning % club advanced to the second season (playoffs in bold):
Year | Team | OT/SO W | OT/SO L | Win % |
2012-13 | PITTSBURGH | 5 | 0 | 1.000 |
2012-13 | ST LOUIS | 9 | 2 | 0.818 |
2008-09 | NEW JERSEY | 15 | 4 | 0.789 |
2005-06 | COLUMBUS | 14 | 4 | 0.778 |
2007-08 | EDMONTON | 19 | 6 | 0.760 |
2006-07 | TAMPA BAY | 15 | 5 | 0.750 |
2011-12 | BOSTON | 11 | 4 | 0.733 |
2009-10 | PHOENIX | 19 | 7 | 0.731 |
2011-12 | NEW JERSEY | 16 | 6 | 0.727 |
2011-12 | COLORADO | 16 | 6 | 0.727 |
2010-11 | ANAHEIM | 13 | 5 | 0.722 |
2014-15 | COLUMBUS | 13 | 5 | 0.722 |
2005-06 | DALLAS | 15 | 6 | 0.714 |
2006-07 | VANCOUVER | 17 | 7 | 0.708 |
2008-09 | COLORADO | 12 | 5 | 0.706 |
2010-11 | NY RANGERS | 12 | 5 | 0.706 |
Anyway, you're probably tired of hearing about how Los Angeles is "post-regulation challenged." But look on the bright side! The 2012 Kings managed to win it all despite the worst regular season team shooting % ever for a post-1967 champion. The 2014 Kings took home the silver chalice despite being the only champ to endure three four-game or more pointless streaks in a year. These Kings are the kings of overcoming "despite"...but now, they'll need a little help.
