Calgary Flames @ Los Angeles Kings Game 79 Recap: Kings embarrassing again, lose 7-2

109-Word Recap

Everyone had settled into a tight 3-2 game at Staples Center between the Flames and the Kings after two periods. But then, in search of their 50th win, Calgary flipped the switch, scoring four goals in a span of 8:45 and cruised to a 7-2 win.

Derek Ryan scored twice and Mark Jankowski had a goal and two assists. Sam Bennett, Johnny Gaudreau, James Neal and Andrew Mangiapane also scored for the Flames, who reached the 50-win mark for the second time in franchise history. Looking to get the nod to start the playoffs, David Rittich made his case with 23 saves.

The Pacific Division rivals were tied at two after the first period, paced by Kyle Clifford’s career high 10th goal and Dustin Brown’s 22nd.

Coach’s Corner: What Willie Desjardins Did Wrong Tonight

The list of players who won’t be inviting the interim coach to their holiday parties has officially expanded to include Ilya Kovalchuk (founding member), Jonny Brodzinski, and Jonathan Quick. Why? Here’s why:

  • Kovalchuk—the man who gave credence to everything we, at Jewels From The Crown, have been saying all year.
  • Brodzinski—In order to make room for Kovalchuk on the fourth line, Willie Desjardins decided to scratch Jonny B. You know, so he could evaluate the young guys better.
  • Quick—It’s no secret that the quiet burn going on inside of our Conn Smythe goalie has Willie D. in the crosshairs. Tonight was just the latest example of Willie giving the big fahzoo to Quick, letting him get pummeled with grade A chance after grade A chance. There was nothing in front of him all night. Less than nine minutes into the third period, Quick had seen seven pucks beat him, including four in rapid succession. So enraged after being left to suffer behind a porous defensive “effort”, Quick disappeared into the tunnel for a spell before returning to the bench./

Quotables

Drew Doughty:

“I wish we played all four games in a row to be honest. I just want to get this over with.”

Willie Desjardins:

“I think it’s a tough year for him [Jonathan Quick]. We haven’t helped him. We haven’t given him what he needs. But he’s always there for his team. In practice he’s ready and focused. There is nobody who wants to win more than he does. I can count on him. He’s just got that character.”
