Men’s hockey: Dowd’s travels have led him to St. Cloud State | sctimes.com | St Cloud Times
There are the traditional places that college hockey players grow up in. Then there is Nic Dowd. Quick, name how many players you know who are from Huntsville, Ala., in the WCHA. Yeah, there’s Dowd and … no one. […] Dowd, a freshman, is tied for fourth on the Huskies in scoring with 10 points after being named the MVP of the Florida College Classic last week. He also was named WCHA Rookie of the Week after picking up four points in the tournament. Dowd’s parents have had a big hand in his career, despite also not being from a country known for hockey. Alan and Liz Dowd are originally from England. […] Nic left home at 15 to play for Culver Academy, a prep school in Indiana. “My dad was the first guy to coach my brothers and he’d coach from the bench because he didn’t know how to skate. He still doesn’t know how to skate,” said Dowd, who speaks without a southern accent. “He tried to learn how for about 10 years. He’d be the guy in full equipment with no stick in public session (skating) trying to skate around and falling all over the place. […] “My dad started out just wearing two gloves and a stick,” he said of his goalie for target practice. “I hit him in the foot, so then he started wearing boots. I hit him in the shins and he started wearing shin guards. I hit him in the head and he ended up wearing a helmet. As each shot went by, he ended up wearing more and more equipment.”

Read the whole thing. Love Dowd. Hope he gets a contract.
