Report: Davis Drewiske traded to Montreal for a 5th round pick

The Kings have made more moves on the defense front, clearing another spot on the roster.

Darren Dreger reports that Davis Drewiske, who played 20 games for the Kings this season, has been traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a 2013 5th round draft pick.

After trading for Regehr last night, and announcing that Willie Mitchell was done for the season today, the Kings were carrying eight defensemen. Dustin Penner’s lower body injury, sustained late in the game against Dallas while he tried for a breakaway, landed him on IR and temporarily prevented the Kings from having to move player from their roster.

Now we will see if the Kings are preparing to make other roster moves at the deadline.

What do the Habs get in Drewiske?

Every team needs an extra defenseman, and 28-year-old Drewiske always understood his role and remained a class act throughout. He makes a serviceable third pairing defender, especially if partnered with a puckmover. Given the health of the Kings’ defense last year, he never got a shot in the playoffs; but he could thrive on another team if given an opportunity to gain more NHL experience. Though he was sheltered from defensive zone draws and tough competition, his underlying possession numbers are solid. He also surprised me with his penalty killing abilities this season.

However, Drewiske is pending free agent, and the Kings appear to be interested in developing Keaton Ellerby.

I am sorry to see Drewiske go, but I hope he has a chance at a larger role on his new team. He was a terrific teammate, and we wish him all the best.
