Game Day Watch, 3/4: Vancouver Canucks @ Los Angeles Kings
I thought we were playing Washington today, so I feel a little more positive.
HOW TO WATCH
Game Time: 7:00 PM Pacific
TV: Fox Sports West
Radio: KABC AM 790
Stream: Fox Sports Go (requires cable subscription)
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
if you’re a Kings fan: Toronto was going to be one of the toughest games of the homestand, and the Kings came up with a big third period effort to earn two points and start things off right. LA gets four days off after tonight, so while I’d worry about a letdown against a weak team, the Kings have no reason to take their foot off the gas. Just need goals.
if you’re a Canucks fan: Vancouver hasn’t necessarily admitted defeat, but they sold pieces at the deadline, and Calgary’s surge has all but knocked them out of the playoff hunt. But the Sedins are presumably staying around and GM Jim Benning has shown some good sense, so Vancouver’s young players are going to get plenty of seasoning down the stretch. And I’m pretty sure they still hate us.
if you’re a hockey fan: On paper, this is one of the biggest mismatches on the NHL schedule today. So why tune in? You can see if Jarome Iginla gets comfortable, if Ben Bishop can win his first start for the Kings, if former Sharks prospect Nikolay Goldobin can thrive in his Vancouver debut, and if the absence of Alex Burrows gives way to a very friendly atmosphere!
PLAYERS TO WATCH
for the Kings: Nic Dowd. Fellow bottom-six center Nick Shore sustained an arm injury courtesy of Roman Polak (as best as I can tell) on Thursday, which means more responsibility for Dowd. Dowd hasn’t scored a goal since December 22; perhaps a larger role will help him find the net once again.
for the Canucks: Nikita Tryamkin. Another Nick (kind of). Tryamkin has been one of the bright spots for Vancouver, as the 22-year-old rookie has played a physical game on the Canucks’ blueline. If tensions flare up tonight, he might have something to do with it.
