You might recall that for the last couple of years I have been confidently stating that Garrett Roe needed to be signed by 8/15/11 or the Kings would lose his rights. You might also recall that, just last month, I announced that I had been wrong and the real date was 8/15/12. You might further recall my explanation involved the fact that Roe had completed one year of college by the time he was drafted, and that I further explained how I had “mistakenly” used the 8/15 after college graduation rule, instead of the 8/15 four years after draft year rule. You might even further recall my snarky post last week mocking NHL.com for listing Roe as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Garret Roe is headed to “The City of Brotherly Love.” The former St. Cloud State star forward confirmed to KVSC’s Zack Fisch today via his Twitter page that he has signed with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Roe, who just completed his senior year, notched 65 goals and 113 assists in his four seasons with the Huskies. He sits third all-time in career points at SCSU with 178. The Vienna, Virginia native helped lead the Huskies to their first ever NCAA Tournament win on March 26, 2010 when he scored a goal and setup two more, including the game winner, in SCSU’s 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan. Roe said he will participate in the Flyer’s main NHL camp which starts on September 16. He will be among familiar faces including former SCSU linemate Andreas Nodl, and teammate last year, Oliver Laurdisen, who left SCSU to sign with the Flyers. After that, Roe will head camp with the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers’ AHL affiliate. Roe was originally drafted in the 7th Round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. However, the Kings opted not to sign Roe by the August 15, 2011 deadline, making him a free agent.
I’m sure someone in the Kings organization has been laughing at the pretzel I turned myself into over this. Okay, first thing’s first:
- I re-triple-checked the CBA, and it turns out I was right (before I was wrong) that the 8/15 the year of graduation rule applies to Roe.
- Therefore the Kings had till 8/15 (last month) to sign him, just like I had been saying for years.
- Except last month I had a brain fart and decided that wasn’t true. And apologized for leading everyone astray.
- I must now apologize for that apology. When I said I had led you astray, I was leading you astray.
- NHL.com, far from short-circuiting, was in fact (somehow) ahead of this story.
- Garrett Roe is now a member of the Flyers organization.
- The KVSC article (above) gets one thing wrong though (I mean, in addition to spelling his name wrong). Roe was not drafted in 2007, four years ago. He was drafted in 2008. As I correctly maintained in last month’s otherwise completely incorrect retraction of what I have now de-retracted, he had already finished a year of college by the time the Kings drafted him.
So, aren’t you glad I cleared that up?
