Los Angeles Kings October Prospect Update

We’re kicking off a new series here at JFTC wherein we’ll be keeping you abreast of how the prospects are doing on their various farms. We’ll start by translating each prospects' early season numbers to their NHL equivalencies. Along the way, we'll be bringing you any relevant weekly news you may have missed.

Through the efforts of hockey analytics heartthrobs Gabe Desjardins & Rob Vollman (among others) we are able to approximate a prospect's NHL equivalent point totals. Each league has different equivalency numbers which you can adjust according to a players age. Obvioulsy, NHLe has it's limitations, but it is a useful way to do a quick & dirty analysis. Here are the results.

- Tyler Toffoli is off to a blazing start. He leads all prospects in NHL translations. His 7 AHL goals so far this season would be the equivalent of 4 goals in the NHL. Which over the course of 82 games would give him 33 goals, that would put him 2nd on the Kings current roster— just behind Jeff Carter.

Toffoli recorded 2 goals and an assist in his last game. In fact, the line of Pearson-Vey-Toffoli scored 4 of the Monarchs 5 goals in that one:

-Hudson Fasching is doing very well, having scored 8 points in 6 games. He’s making a strong case for making the US WJC roster. He still doesn’t know how to properly celebrate scoring a goal:

-Nikolay Prokhorkin has showed that he can hang with the big boys of the KHL. He is seeing a lot of playing time and producing. His NHL equivalent scoring rate over a full 82 games is 44 points. That would put him right at the top of Kings current roster among left wingers. He recorded his first career hat trick earlier this season:

-Maxim Kitsyn, on the other hand, has really struggled to find his way into the Monarchs line-up. He’s only logged two games and has been held off the score sheet.

-Valentin Zykov was the Kings’ first selection in the past years’ draft. He’s gotten off to slow start and is off his scoring pace from a year ago. Luckily, it is still very early and 10 games is a tiny sample.

-The only mentionable performance among goaltending prospects has been the play of Martin Jones. He’s played in 9 games and has a 6-1-2 record to go along with a .929 sv%.
