Kings, Red Wings, Penguins, and Canucks Make Doan’s “Short List” — But Hang On, Phoenix Isn’t Out Yet

Shane Doan’s agent, Terry Bross, has been a busy bee today. He’s everywhere — and he’s stirring up a bidding war.

Thanks to him, we knew eleven teams had already expressed interest in Doan. Bross noted that “two or three” teams would get a long look, even though it would “break his heart to do so.”

Today, Bross dropped hints about which teams Doan would seriously consider.

The Los Angeles Kings

Via Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times:

The reigning champs are an hour’s flight from Phoenix, if he doesn’t want to move his family.

The Detroit Red Wings

Via Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press:

Detroit is…Detroit. And they have loads of cash.

The Pittsburgh Penguins

Via Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Not close in location, but no surprise here.

The Vancouver Canucks

Via CKWX radio:

Doan’s family has connections to B.C.

Three points:

  • The teams on this list are all contenders, so they all make sense.
  • This list is longer than “two or three”– but if you’re his agent, why eliminate anyone? More offers create more leverage.
  • Phoenix can’t be ruled out yet. Even though he may begin to explore his options tomorrow, the referendum question isn’t settled. If Doan does want to stay in Phoenix, he will have all those other offers to show Maloney. /

We’ll know more about the Coyotes‘ ownership question after 2 p.m. today. Until then? His agent is just doing his job.

So, let’s play the game. What is the maximum you’d offer Doan in an over-35 contract? Is he a luxury or a necessity?

How many years maximum would you offer Doan?

2 years 99
3 years 136
4 years 25
5 – HE WON “MANTRACKER”!!!!! 12
