Kings Trim Roster to 31 Players; Marc-Andre Cliche Claimed by Colorado. Who's Left?

As we get closer to the start of the 2013 regular season, the Los Angeles Kings have made a second round of cuts to their roster. On Saturday the Kings officially sent 14 players to Manchester and 1 (Valentin Zykov) to his junior team. The full list is here and includes roster hopefuls such as Andy Andreoff, Jordan Weal, and Nicolas Deslauriers. LA also placed three players on waivers: Andrew Campbell, Marc-Andre Cliche, and Brandon Kozun. Today, we found out that only two of them cleared. While Campbell and Kozun will start the season with the Manchester Monarchs, Cliche was picked up by the Colorado Avalanche.

Cliche has been the captain of the Manchester Monarchs since the start of the 2010 season. But Cliche's story is the same as the one we've heard for a number of waived players over the last few years: he just couldn't crack the Kings' lineup (aside from one game in 2009-10), and his time was running out. Cliche joins Thomas Hickey and Rich Clune on the list of players who will have to prove themselves elsewhere.

At any rate, we now have a smaller list of players who will be competing for spots in the opening night lineup. The entire Manchester White Line (Toffoli, Pearson, and Vey) remains with the big club, as does the surprising Nick Shore, who might be the biggest winner of training camp. Defensemen Derek Forbort and Andrew Bodnarchuk survive a little longer against the Kings' nine NHL defensemen, and Mathieu Garon sticks around with Quick and Scrivens.
