Los Angeles Kings @ Edmonton Oilers Game 76 Recap: Oilers run out of hats, overpower Kings, 8-4

124-Word Recap

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl became the first teammates to score hat tricks in the same game since 2008 as the Edmonton Oilers overpowered the Kings 8-4 at Rogers Arena.

Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists, Draisaitl added an assist, and Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, who crept closer to a wild card spot in the Western Conference, sitting five points out with six games remaining.

Alex Iafallo, Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown and Carl Grundstrom scored for the Kings who had won their previous three straight games (treat yourself to those highlights below).

It was the eleventh time this season the Kings lost by at least four goals and the fourth time they have allowed seven goals in a game.

Coach’s Corner: What Willie Desjardins Did Wrong Tonight

Willie D. surely missed his seventh defenseman, having to scratch Kurtis MacDermid. With the Kings down 5-1 after one period, you would have figured the time was ripe to play the young forwards a healthy amount of time. With the exception of Carl Grundstrom who played a Jeff Carter-like 18:52, the rest of the kids’ TOI went like this: Michael Amadio 10:28, Austin Wagner 10:22, Jonny Brodzinski 9:27.

Quotables

Willie Desjardins:

“We had a pretty good start to the game. Quick made some big saves too, it wasn’t that he didn’t, he made two or three really good saves in the first period. But it seemed other things were going in on us. They have a good team, they’re explosive, we know that, and when you get behind, you’re trying to come back and it’s a tough process because they’re going to turn some two-on-ones and they’re pretty skilled.”

Anze Kopitar:

“Not much to say about that one. I thought coming out in the second and getting a goal, that was obviously positive, but we can’t expect to win many games when you’re down 5-1.”
