Los Angeles Kings Place Mike Richards On Waivers

Stunning news this morning as the Los Angeles Kings prepare for a post-All Star Break charge; Mike Richards is on his way out of Los Angeles. Via Elliotte Friedman, who is as reliable as they come on these things:

The way forward is simple: either Richards is claimed by another team and his salary gets picked up, or no one claims him, he goes down to the Manchester Monarchs, and part of his salary no longer counts against the Los Angeles Kings’ cap [EDIT: $925K, to be exact]. We’ll find out what happens in the next 24 hours.

Richards has a $5.75 million cap hit on his current deal, which runs until 2019-20. He’s got five goals and 15 points in 47 games this season.

The Kings, of course, had an opportunity to buy out Richards’ contract in the offseason and did not. That’s looking like a rather large error in judgment, to say the least, especially since Dean Lombardi has clearly been unable to find a trade partner. Do you think he’ll be claimed?

More on this to come.

Will Mike Richards be claimed off of waivers by another team?
