Kings trade defenseman Oscar Fantenberg to Calgary Flames

The closer we got to the final buzzer of the trade deadline, the more it looked like the Kings would hang onto Oscar Fantenberg, a pending UFA who has proved that he can be an everyday NHL player. That wasn’t to be, though, as with around 30 minutes left to make trades, Rob Blake sent Fantenberg north to the Calgary Flames, who were in search of some more depth to their defense.

The Kings receive a 2020 fourth round draft pick from the Flames in exchange. Per CapFriendly, the fourth round pick becomes a third round if the Flames reach the Western Conference final and Fantenberg plays in at least 50% of the playoff games.

Fantenberg had three points (two goals, one assist) in 46 NHL games this season. He isn’t a player with a flashy game and generally goes unnoticed on the ice — both a good thing and a bad thing. For the Flames, he can slot into a third pairing role where he won’t be expected to play big minutes or drive offense.

Good luck to Oscar in the playoffs!
