New Season, New Faces!

A new hockey season is here, the Kings are … well, they’re adequate, I guess … and we’re working hard to make sure we’ve got great stuff for you to read all season long.

While we’ve got plenty of Veteran Grit here at Jewels (thanks to Carlos, Eric, James, Robyn, and myself), it felt like time to call up some rookies to help provide depth scoring. (Okay, that’s as far as I can take this hockey analogy.) So! I’d like to take a minute to introduce our new group of writers to all of you. You’ll be seeing their names popping up on articles across the site shortly, so here’s your chance to get to know them a little more.

Presented in alphabetical order, your new crop of JFTC contributors are:

Colin: Ontario Reign and Manchester Monarchs coverage

As a kid I really liked hockey, but never got the chance to get in to it. I’m just your average beer leaguer who started playing hockey after he left the Marine Corps after 8 years, in 2013. I signed up for a local learn to skate class and fell in love with it immediately. I started as a skater, defenseman mostly, and then eventually decided to join a special group of people who think stopping pucks is fun. At the same time, I started watching hockey regularly, and as a native of Los Angeles it was a natural fit to follow the Kings. I went to one game at the Staples Center and I was hooked. I have a degree in Athletic Training (Sports Medicine) from CSU Northridge and I’m working on my MBA currently, through Syracuse University.

Jay: goalies and other special features

Jay has been a hockey fan for just under five years, and accidentally became a Kings fan in 2016, when he was introduced to the Kings Read Mean Tweets videos, and subsequently the existence of American Hero Trevor Lewis. Being from England, he routinely stays up until three am to watch a bunch of men with knives on their feet try to murder each other. A goalie himself, he has a particular fondness for Jonathan Quick and his, uh, temperament, as well as an appreciation for all goalies in the league and the weirdness they embody.

Kelsey: copyediting and prospects

I’m a Southern Californian in Boston. My first NHL game was Ducks vs. Red Wings in the mid-90s and I still haven’t entirely forgiven the Red Wings for winning that game.

When I’m not trying to stay awake long enough to watch west coast hockey games, I enjoy cooking, long walks, hanging out with my cat Rookie (absolutely a hockey homage), and trying new things.

Matthew: morning links posts and game day coverage

I’m a 24 years old Kings fan living in Virginia. I’m a fairly new hockey fan (about 4-5 years). I’m also the only Kings fan in a family full of diehard Capitals fans. My love of the Kings was born mainly out of the fact I love Los Angeles. It’s always been a city close to my heart and when I first got into hockey I found myself drawn to LA’s hockey team. Plus I worked in the airline industry at the time and it would give me an excuse to plan trips to LA. I’m looking forward to talking hockey with everyone and hopefully learning more about the game.

Michael: opinion column, “Perspectives from the Cheap Seats”

Michael Lloyd used to sit in Jack Kent Cooke’s office at the Fabulous Forum stuffing season tickets into envelopes. Since then he’s grown up to be a modern-day mad man with a couple of Clio Awards and Emmys to his credit while penning multiple books. As a 45-year Kings fan, Lloyd brings a unique brand of angst and perspective to the cheap seats.
