Deadline Day Watch: Updates on Trades Around the League

12:00 PM: Are the Kings done? No one has gone on the record saying as much, and trades can still come through the wire, but it’s noon and the possibilities are limited. PA Parenteau, Valteri Filppula, and Curtis Lazar are among those who have moved in the last hour, while Patrick Sharp, Radim Vrbata, and Ryan Miller are among the big names likely to stay put.

Oh, and neither Gabriel Landeskog nor Matt Duchene has been traded.

We will keep you posted, as always!

10:20 AM: And, as you might have expected, the other shoe has dropped.

Our story is here. Kings might be done with two hours to go, but with Colorado retaining salary, there could be room for another acquisition.

9:25 AM: We have a trade. There was word Dwight King might be available…

… and he was. Our story is here.

We’ll have a separate post on the move, but for now, it looks like the Kings have more cap space for a winger. Who shall it be?

9:05 AM: Thomas Vanek, one of the more reasonably priced wingers available, is headed to the Florida Panthers. Would you have traded Paul LaDue (or Kevin Gravel, I dunno) and a third-round pick for a Vanek rental? Because that’s essentially what it would’ve taken to beat the offer. I’m not so sure I would.

8:40 AM: Something else to keep an eye on: whether the Kings can dump Marian Gaborik’s contract. Losing #12 wouldn’t “improve” LA in any way, shape, or form, but being able to get rid of the cap hit would be hugely beneficial down the road.

8:30 AM: OK, this is less dull.

Jarome Iginla is 39 years old and plays for the Colorado Avalanche. This is extremely reminiscent of LA’s move for Vincent Lecavalier last year, which worked out better than expected. It would also probably be the only move the Kings make if they go for it.

8:10 AM: Most of the hockey media says the count of Deadline Day trades is now at three. In our official opinion, the late-night trades of Jannik Hansen to the San Jose Sharks and Steve Ott (lol) to the Montreal Canadiens don’t count, as they occurred before midnight Pacific time. So the trade that broke between Arizona and Colorado is the first domino! Hooray!

this is dull

7:10 AM: I hope you didn’t get up early if you live on the West Coast. So far, there have been zero trades in the month of March, and we’re stuck waiting for something — anything — to happen and to start the wave of last-minute deals. But wait, as we put this deadline live updates thread together, a sign of life!

What could it be?

Oh. Great. Jay and Dan, I love you, but if this is the biggest swap of the day I am going to be remarkably disappointed.

Anyway, the window for Dean Lombardi, or anyone else, to make a trade is 12 PM Pacific. We’ll keep you posted on what goes down, especially for the Los Angeles Kings.
