Ontario Reign: #FancyStats 3/4 Season Review

Here are estimated Ontario Reign even strength scoring chance, ES Corsi, and all situations faceoff counts at the halfway point of the season.

But before we get to those, Hubie McDonough, Reign Director of Hockey Operations, was kind enough to share his thoughts about a number of Ontario prospects.

Jewels from the Crown: Adrian Kempe has gone through a tough time scoring recently (JFTC note: He went 17 games without a goal). Do you think that’s affecting other facets of his game?

Hubie McDonough: I think overall, he’s played well. He’s had a little setback now, getting banged up. And then coming back from the World Juniors. Getting accustomed back to playing in North America here.

We’ve been very happy with his progress. He’ll probably spend a little more time here in the minors, but they have big plans for him out in LA.

JFTC: Rookie Jonny Brodzinski seems to have found his footing in the AHL (Note: After going scoreless in his first 17 games, he’s notched 10 goals in his last 32). Where has he grown the most this season?

HM: Just learning how to play. He came in at the end of last year, he had the bad ankle with us in Manchester. He really didn’t play at all. He could barely skate.

Then coming in this year was really his first full camp. At the beginning of this year, he was in and out of the lineup. And now, he’s worked his way in. I think he’s in the top-six of forwards. He’s getting better and better. I think his skating is getting better. He’s playing a little more physical. So he’s not intimidated. His whole game has grown. It’s tough to pick one aspect. Just maturing and understanding how to play. You don’t have to be afraid, just go out and play. And that’s what he’s doing now.

JFTC: What he overwhelmed by the AHL’s physicality at first?

HM: It happens to most of the guys, whether you come out of junior or college. The physicality and the way the game is played…it’s different in junior, it’s different in college. You have to adjust to that. Practices are harder. Everything’s physical there too. He’s adjusted to that, and he’s worked his way in. I don’t think he’ll be in and out of the lineup for the rest of the year.

JFTC: Michael Mersch mentioned that the Kings wanted him to be more patient with puck offensively and get it up the ice more quickly. Was he doing that in his second stint in Ontario, after his first call-up? (Note: This additional patience might explain the slowing of his scoring chances…after 50 in his first 22 games, he’s had 19 in his last 13 appearances…his shots per game pace has also slowed, 4.9/game before his first call-up, 3.8 since)

HM: Yeah. You don’t have to worry about Mike, he’s going to be okay.

And again, adjusting to [the AHL], he did. He had a great season with us last year. And then, again, it’s another step. The NHL is another step. Everything happens, but just a little bit quicker. [The organization is] very happy with his progress.

The main thing for Mike is, when he gets it on the boards in his own zone, make sure the puck gets out. That’s what he’s doing. His skating is going to keep getting better and better and better. He’s going to catch up to that pace.

But when he came back down here, we don’t have any problem with him. Not everybody’s going to do everything 100% of the time, but 99% of the time, we’re not worried about Mike Mersch.

JFTC: In terms of getting the puck out, is that more of a mental or physical issue for him?

HM: That’s the mentality of the Kings, not just him. They want you to make sure you make a play on the boards…not just chip it out. I mean, you’re going to do that occasionally. But they’d like you to make a play. So the first option is, get that puck, use your body to protect that puck and then find a center. That’s what we teach here. And that’s what they want him to do up there.

JFTC: It’s been an up-and-down season for Joel Lowry. Where have you seen the most progress? What needs work?

HM: He might be in the same category with Brods. He had back surgery last year, so he recovered from that. He had a whole month [this season] when he couldn’t even play here. He was just getting back skating.

Again, adjusting to the pace. And he’s trying to adjust to the pace when people have already adjusted. I think he started in December, he got cleared. He was in and out of the line-up. So guys are in mid-season form, and he’s just jumping in to his first game in almost a year because he sat out after the surgery.

But again, just like Brods, the pace, the intimidation…he’s not intimidated anymore. It’s a game that he can play. He’s a big, strong kid.

And scoring! He and Brods can both score goals. Once they get that confidence, I guess, that’s going to help their game. But I think his skating…he’s caught up with the pace. He’s making the plays on the boards that he didn’t make earlier in the year. That’s all we could ask is little baby steps.

JFTC: You mentioned his scoring ability. Where are his scoring areas?

HM: Yeah, his shot, just like Brods.

The other night in Texas, finally, we saw [Brodzinski] score off the rush. Just inside the circle. And that’s what we were told he could do. We’ve been waiting for that.

JFTC: Justin Auger is certainly making a name for himself out there. But he still seems to be struggling with offensive consistency, as he scores his goals in bunches. What can he do to improve that consistency?

HM: There’s a big body right there. His skating is always going to be a point of contention. He’s got to keep up with the pace. He [did] that last year, and better this year.

But it’s his size and strength and the way he protects the pucks, those are his strengths. When he comes around the net. He’s going to score, he’s going to be a dirty area guy. I don’t think he’s going to blast the puck off the wing.

It’s tough to pick one thing he could do to make himself a better scorer. He’s been working on the in-tight moves and in-tight releases. Those are things we work on in practice. I don’t know if he’s ever going to get 30 goals in the NHL, but certainly, he can poke in 10 or 12 if he mucks it up in the minutes he’ll get at that level.

JFTC: Tell me about Andrew Crescenzi’s progress this season from last.

HM: Cres is a great story. He never got a chance. He didn’t even come to main camp two years ago, and he was under an NHL contract. He didn’t complain. In Manchester, he worked hard. And he really had a great season last year for us. He took up a lot of minutes that we never expected him to take up.

He works on his draws. Big centerman like that, you got to be strong on faceoffs. And that’s what he’s done. I don’t know if he’s ever going to be a natural goal scorer, so to speak, but he can poke in 8 to 10 to 12 goals, just being in those dirty areas too.

But his main focus for us is penalty killing, draws, and defensive game.

JFTC: Speaking of ice time, where would Crescenzi rank among forwards? (Note: Crescenzi has been scorching hot at the dot, winning 60.3% in his last 34 games)

HM: [Newbury] would be back in the mix. Newbs plays the power play, he kills a little bit. Cresczy kills quite a bit, plays a regular shift. I’d say they’d be up there. Up front, I’d say [Backman], Dowder…Cresczy would probably be in the top five.

JFTC: Speaking of Nic Dowd, at 25, he’s older than the usual prospect, yet he’s frequently mentioned among LA’s top prospects. What about his game keeps management so high on him? (Note: To give you an idea of how much Ontario leans on Dowd, he and Mersch lead forwards with 30 ES Corsi events/game…the next closest is Backman with 26.8)

HM: Yeah, it would’ve been nice to see him…it didn’t work out this year to get a chance to play some games [in the NHL].

But he’s done everything they’ve asked him to do. He did it last year. And as I said, an older player, he went four years to college…nothing wrong with that, he’s more mature. He understands how to play.

And he knows what his role is going to be. Maybe, tops…he’d be a second-line center up there. Probably a good third-line center, where he’d chip in some goals and be strong defensively.

He makes passes some times in games, how did he see that guy out of the corner? He’s done a really nice job for us. And I think they’re a little disappointed, they would’ve liked to see him get a chance this year too.

All he needs is a chance and a sniff to see what that pace is like, just like Merschy did this year. I think he’s going to be alright.

JFTC: You mentioned him missing his NHL shot this year, but the season’s not over yet. Are you referring to the four AHL call-up limit after the Trade Deadline as to why they won’t call him up later this year?

HM: No, it just didn’t work out this year. For Merschy, they had some banged-up wingers. For centers, they were strong down the middle, and the opportunity wasn’t there for him. But it didn’t phase him at all. He didn’t complain about it, he’s worked hard every game. Even when he saw his linemate getting called up, doesn’t bother him one bit.

JFTC: Now onto defensemen. Darryl Sutter said he wanted more emotion out of Derek Forbort. Have you noticed any change in that area or any other area of his game since he’s come back down?

HM: Well, again, we always talk about the pace. It’s probably much more difficult for a defenseman to handle the pace than a forward…top players in the world, he had to adjust to that. And he faced those guys everyday in practice too. He had to adjust to that, and maybe it didn’t happen as fast as he would’ve liked or the Kings would’ve liked.

So they want to make sure that he’s playing and not just sitting out. Cause you get stale. You sit out, 10, 12, and you’re just skating after practice. It’s not good for your growth. They want you to play games, battle against other jerseys, not just your teammates. So that’s why they sent him down here to get a little more seasoned, as they say.

Emotion-wise? I think he’s played well for us. He’s got to make better decisions. He’s got to work on that. That comes with under pressure, doing those things. Under pressure in game situations. His growth, it’s just maybe a little slow. Like a goaltender they say, it’s a little slower for them, then defensemen…it’s easier for the forwards.

JFTC: But the issue for him is that his entry-level contract expires after this season.

HM: Oh, yes…I lose track. It seems like he just came! It’s already three years for him, huh? So they’ll have to make a decision this summer, what they want to do with Derek. I don’t have the ins and outs of what their plans are. All we can do is ask him to do the best he can here, make it hard for them to make a decision.

JFTC: When we talk about Kevin Gravel’s strengths, a lot of people talk about his stick and mobility. Do you feel his decisiveness warrants just as much praise?

HM: I think those things that you mention are his biggest things. His skating and his stick. Great stick position. And understanding. Another guy who’s played four years in college. A little more mature.

And I think he did a really nice job. They were very, very happy with his play up there.

What he needs to do is get physically stronger. Put some muscle on and be able to win those one-on-one battles and battle in front of the net. That’s what he’s going to do this summer. They’ll get him on a program, get him stronger…he’ll have a good chance to make that club next year.

JFTC: When MacDermid was suspended for 12 games, Zac Leslie got an extended look. What were some of the positives and negatives of his play in that stretch?

HM: His frame…he’s only 20 years old. Got to put some weight on, be able to battle. And I think that’s the main concern, him just being strong enough. Got to take a good summer of working out under the tutelage of the Kings guys. Get him heavier.

Skating, puck-wise, does everything we ask him to do. And he’s one of the guys…we’re really lacking that real solid power play defenseman. Ehrhoff covered that for a short bit. I think that is where he could really excel…Where his game is, is offensive.

JFTC: Speaking of power play defenseman, isn’t LoVerde doing a good job there? (Note: LoVerde is leading Ontario blueliners with 31 points in 52 games)

HM: Oh, yeah. But we’re really looking at a guy that’s like Honka for Texas. A really offensive guy.

Vinny covers the bill, but I don’t think he would consider himself a top-of-the-line power play defenseman. We got guys who can cover us. But we’re talking about a bona fide offensive guy.

JFTC: Almost like a specialist?

HM: Yeah, right. Vinny’s more of a…hybrid, they can cover you on the second unit. But that number-one power play guy? I think that’s what they think Les is.

JFTC: It’s been a tough year so far for Nick Ebert in terms of injuries. But how much growth have you seen from him defensively this year? (Note: Ebert has missed 22 games this season) and production (Note: He has one goal in 30 games this season, after eight in 45 last year)

HM: Yeah. I think a good stick, which we really harp on. Everybody, forwards and D alike. Good stick position. And I think he’s done well in that regard.

Last year, he was on kind of a rotation with [Gravel and Raine]…they welcomed it. There were no complaints. This year, he’s gotten to play more. He had the tough injury with the back. It’s a tough thing to come back from. But he’s done well.

Again, decision making for all these guys is the thing. You got to make the right decision. Make the easy play. And you harp on them, harp on them, harp on them. And sometimes, they’ll do it 9 out of 10 times, and that one time, it comes back to bite you. Just playing and getting more experience and more comfortable at the pace.

Certainly a physical specimen. When he’s up and going, he’s powerful, he can skate, he’s strong. So we’re looking for big things from him.

JFTC: In Kurtis MacDermid’s first 28 games, he had 24 shots. In the last 11, he’s had 22. (Note: Perhaps another sign of his increased confidence with the puck, he leads all Reign defenders with 4.3 individual ES shot attempts per game in the last 17…he was third with 2.5/game in the first half). Talk about his perhaps surprising offensive skill and maturation.

HM: Yeah, I don’t think that’s what he’s known for. Certainly physical play, that’s number-one…They want him to be a solid defensive defenseman. So getting offense out of him is a bonus. I don’t know if that’s something he really works on that much. It’s more strength, battle in front, make the first pass out of his zone, come up into the play…

We’ve got a lot guys in that position. Solid defensive defenseman who can chip in now and then. That’s not what we’re looking for out of Kurtis. Physical play, good first pass, good defensively, good penalty kill, those are his attributes.
