Ontario Reign re-sign Brett Sutter

Ontario Reign forward Brett Sutter has re-signed with the team on a one-year AHL contract. Next season will mark the 33-year-old’s sixth with the Reign, serving as captain from 2017 through last season.

Sutter’s 14-year AHL career has seen him dress for 870 games, scoring 164 goals and 228 assists. Initially drafted by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has also played for the Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild organizations, serving as captain and alternate captain for their respective AHL affiliates. He’s played 60 NHL games in that time, scoring 2 goals and 8 assists, most recently with the Wild in the 2014-15 season.

Since joining the Reign in 2016, Sutter has set several franchise records, comprising games played (275), goals (69), assists (79) and points (148). He represented the team at the 2018 AHL All-Star Game and was named the winner of the 2019 Fred T. Hunt Award, given to the AHL player who “best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey.” He was the 39th player in AHL history to play in 800 games, marking the occasion with the Reign last year.

Sutter is the middle child of former LA Kings head coach Darryl Sutter, who won two Stanley Cups in his time with the team from 2011 until 2017.
