Postgame/Rank the Players: Kopitar’s Hat Trick Drives Dramatic Comeback

Mood:

I can only assume that someone threw that hat at him after he scored his third goal to tie tonight’s game. Sure, it was banked in off a New York Ranger in front, but a goal is a goal, and a point is a point for the Los Angeles Kings. And two points is two points, so thanks for that, Tanner.

A lot went wrong tonight; Marian Gaborik got hurt early on, Peter Budaj didn’t quite live up to the standards set by Jonathan Quick and Jhonas Enroth this year, and Alec Martinez ‘s third puck over glass penalty of the year (and second in two games) set up an apparent winner for Kevin Hayes in the final five minutes. But after Kopitar, who scored 30 seconds from the start of the game, scored 30 seconds from the end, came to the rescue, everything reset for OT. And in that extra session, Budaj was excellent, and recent healthy scratch Tanner Pearson took a stretch pass from Martinez and quickly wristed one past Antti Raanta for the 5-4 winner.
