What to Watch
- It’s not often when the Los Angeles Kings play home games on consecutive dates. It’s a back-to-back nonetheless. How the game goes for them will determine how much fatigue will be a factor.
- The Vegas Golden Knights are also playing their second game on consecutive nights. Whereas the Kings played their game yesterday mid-to-late afternoon, the Knights had their game in the evening and are the visiting team. The back-to-back factor would seemingly be a wash, but perhaps the Kings should have a slight advantage, given those details.
- With games on consecutive dates, expect Jonathan Quick to get the start. Yesterday’s game just marked the second home opener that he was not in net since early in his career (The first being due to a lower body injury at the start of the 2016-2017 season). Marc-Andre Fleury started last night’s game. Malcolm Subban is usually the expected backup goalie, but he was injured in this past Thursday’s game versus the Arizona Coyotes. Perhaps Vegas turns to their third goalie, Oscar Dansk.
- Yesterday, the LA Kings looked dominant over a possible Stanley Cup contender Nashville Predators team for the first 40 minutes. The adjustment in forward lines seemed to pay big dividends. There was a pretty setup by Mike Amadio to Ilya Kovalchuk. Said contender fought hard enough to tie the game, but give credit to the Kings for regrouping, fighting back and scoring the go ahead goal with under a minute to play. Let’s see if they can sustain their effort closer to a full 60 minutes.
- The Vegas Golden Knights currently are first in the league on the penalty kill. Their top scorer, Mark Stone, leads the team with eight points, having recorded two points in four of their five games. Their young center Cody Glass has been mentioned as a possible rookie of the year candidate. Former Kings draft pick Valentin Zykov perhaps hopes to show what the Kings could have had with him, while already playing for his fourth NHL franchise in his young career (following stops with Carolina and Edmonton)./
