Reign #FancyStats Recap: Ontario Rolls On

Here are statistics for the last couple weekends of Ontario Reign games, including a stat which center Nic Dowd told me he’d love to have recorded, faceoffs.

All scoring chance, puck possession, and faceoff counts are estimated; I started tracking draws from the second San Antonio game on.

This Wednesday, Ontario battles San Jose, before busing up to Bakersfield for a Saturday tilt.

10/30/15

The Reign hosted the San Antonio Rampage in the opener of a home back-to-back, suffering their first loss, albeit in overtime, on a Ben Street dagger:

On Halloween, Street came back to chase Ontario off the ice with another OT killer:

[Recap]

  • San Antonio’s Andrew Agozzino missed the last game, but the 30-goal scorer more than made up for his absence, as he registered five of the team’s six scoring chances and assisted on Street’s winner.
  • Some people might be disappointed in the production of supposed goal scorer Jonny Brodzinski, as he has just one assist in 10 games, but I’m not concerned yet. The rookie’s not drawing a regular shift with the Reign’s scorers, but yet, he’s displayed noteworthy offensive talent in most games:

The Barracuda hunted down the Reign in the backend of a three-in-three, handing Ontario its first regulation loss of the season:

[Box Score]

  • Already sporting nine assists in 10 games, Sean Backman has truly been an unsung hero for an Ontario squad that looked like they would miss Jordan Weal and Brian O’Neill. He’s a bit of a late bloomer at 29; as recently as a couple seasons ago, he wasn’t even averaging half a point for Manchester. While his current point-a-game pace seems unlikely to continue, his production has certainly been trending upward, from 26 points in 2013-14 to 44 last year. Set-ups like this (featuring some commendable work from Valentin Zykov too!) have become the norm. RIP Sharks‘ first-round pick Mirco Mueller:

Ontario clipped the high-flying San Diego Gulls at home, powered by an Adrian Kempe hat trick:

[Recap]

  • Zykov has surprised me with his straight-ahead speed. I was not impressed with it in juniors, but he’s more than handled the AHL pace in his rookie campaign. It’s not to say that he’s a burner, but there’s more to work with in this area than I had suspected. This is one of three breakways which he enjoyed this weekendgranted, in this clip, he’s only outracing Shane O’Brien:

  • While they returned Kempe to center, and he’s professed his comfort with playing the position, when his line has been put on the ice in the defensive zone, he hasn’t been taking draws.
  • I’ve noted in all of my #FancyStats recaps that my figures are estimated. I stress this because of the challenges of the AHL streamfor example, on this Backman attempted shot, did Dowd (bottom right) complete his change or is he still to be counted as on the ice?

  • Speaking of this low-quality stream, it cut out from 10:28 to 8:58 of the first period and 5:25 to 2:18 of the third. So the data for this game is not complete./

In probably their worst performance of the young season, the Reign still managed to whitewash the Stockton Heat. While there were some score effects involved, as Ontario raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first, Coach Mike Stothers was displeased, “We were uncharacteristic with our turnovers, uncharacteristic with our shots against, uncharacteristic with the time we spent in our end and uncharacteristic of me to not be very happy with our players.”

[Box Score]

  • Apparently, you can’t trust an AHL stream or box score. This is the official box score for this game:/
  • This is Jordan Samuels-Thomas’s first goal. Notice Andrew Crescenzi right behind him. Now try to find Crescenzi in the “On Ice” section of the box score:/

  • Fittingly, my stream also cut out for about seven minutes of the opening frame. So again, this data is incomplete. But Stockton had most of the play in the first period./
