Report: Regehr to the Kings for two second round draft picks

On a day crazy enough to include a four-team bidding war over Michal Handzus, I began hoping Dean Lombardi might let this trade deadline pass without making any moves. But Regehr trade talk apparently became reality tonight.

Darren Dreger reports that the Los Angeles Kings have acquired pending UFA Robyn Regehr for two second round draft picks.

On the bright side, Tyler Toffoli and other prospects weren’t involved. However, that’s a steep price to pay for a pure rental, even with prior deals distorting the market. And we have yet to see if Regehr will work out.

As we wrote this morning, we are cautious about Regehr’s footspeed being an issue. Robert took an in-depth look at his possession stats this year, and argued that the Kings should avoid him.

Brute force vs. Puck Possession

At last year’s deadline, moving Jack Johnson and rolling with a trio of highly effective puckmovers in Doughty, Voynov, and Martinez on each pair played a big part in the Kings’ transformation into a top puck possession team. Regehr’s numbers should improve on this club, but I worry that he could blunt some of his partner’s effectiveness.

But the Kings certainly value size and grit, and they added that. However, Matt Greene is also supposed to be returning soon. Now the Kings must make room for Regehr on the roster.

Regehr will likely see limited minutes on the third pairing, and also log a lot of penalty kill minutes. Will he thrive there under his old coach Sutter? Tell us what you think.

We’ll keep an ear out for other moves. This wild night isn’t even over yet.
