SKA signs Nabokov, now can’t sign Kovalchuk

Report: KHL Team ‘Close to Signing’ Ilya Kovalchuk, Evgeni Nabokov — NHL FanHouse
Just as it appeared the Los Angeles Kings may be back in the running Ilya Kovalchuk, a Russian sports website reported that a KHL team is close to signing the free-agent winger along with former San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

But, as I understand it, SKA can’t sign both, because (I think) of the KHL cap rules. So to me that looks like one bargaining chip being eliminated, from Kovy’s point of view.

(However, all of my understanding of the way the KHL works is suspect, so factor that in.)
