What to Watch
- A comeback win?! In this economy??! The Kings must be feeling good after coming back from down 2-0 against the Sharks last night. It wasn’t necessarily the best game we’ve seen from the Kings this year, but it was extraordinarily opportunistic, and sometimes, you’ve got to steal a game.
- How about that Martin Frk? Gotta be honest — that is not how I expected that game to go. If you’d said to me yesterday morning, “Martin Frk will score two goals, including the game tying goal in the final minutes of play”, I would have said you were a liar. But here we are. I’ve seen a lot of Frk over the years, particularly during his time with the Red Wings organization, and there’s always been something in his game holding him back from being a consistent, full-time NHLer. He’s often stuck in that bubble of being too good for the AHL, but not good enough — or consistent enough, or versatile enough — to stick in the NHL. He’s played the bulk of his NHL games with the Red Wings, on mediocre teams, and still couldn’t stay in the lineup. Has his game finally rounded out enough to get another extended shot? Time will tell, but last night at least earned him the opportunity to stick around for a while.
- The Canucks play their first game tonight back from the winter break. That team is a bit of a roller coaster right now, struggling to be consistent from game to game. They enter tonight’s contest on a three-game winning streak, but just before that, they had a three-game losing streak that had some fans calling for coach Travis Green’s job. They’ve slipped out of a playoff spot, though are only two points behind Edmonton, who holds the final wild card spot.
- Elias Pettersson is the player to watch for Vancouver; he leads the team in scoring with 39 points in 38 games and is one of the more exciting young players to watch. They have great depth down the middle, with Pettersson, captain Bo Horvat, and Adam Gaudette all playing well in their roles. And they have Quinn Hughes, a smooth-skating, creative young defenseman who’s so fun to watch, I wish he was in another division so I could enjoy him more. /
