2020 IIHF World Junior Quarterfinals Schedule

The preliminary round has wrapped up in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, and schedules have been revealed for the quarterfinal round. Games will take place on January 2. Win, and you continue on to the next round. Lose, and your tournament is over — so no matter what, we’ll be saying goodbye to some Kings prospects in the tournament.

The full quarterfinal schedule (plus the first relegation game) is listed below. Games featuring Kings prospects are in italics. All games will be aired on the NHL Network.

Germany vs. Kazakhstan (Relegation), 1:00 a.m. Pacific

Switzerland vs. Russia, 3:30 a.m. Pacific

Canada vs. Slovakia, 6:00 a.m. Pacific

USA vs Finland, 8:30 a.m. Pacific

Sweden vs. Czech Republic, 11:00 a.m. Pacific

As for how Kings prospects are doing so far? Two of them are making names for themselves in the tournament.

Samuel Fagemo: The Swedish forward is tied for second in overall points, with seven points in four games. He leads the tournament in goals with six and has taken an astounding 26 shots on goal. He has four penalty minutes, is a +4, and is averaging 16:27 of ice time.

Arthur Kaliyev: He’s right behind Fagemo in the scoring race, with six points and four goals in four game. Despite limited usage (an average of 11:08 of ice time, largely on the power play), Kaliyev has 11 shots on goal and is a +4 so far.

As for the rest of our prospects…

Tobias Bjornfot: The defenseman is being used in more of a shutdown role by Swedish head coach Tomas Monten, which is working out well for Sweden, as they’ve only allowed eight goals in the tournament and finished preliminary play as the only undefeated team. Bjornfot has no points, two shots on goal, and is averaging 15:34 of ice time.

Kim Nousiainen: The Finnish defenseman has one goal and two assists over the course of four games. He has six shots on goal, is a +2, and has two penalty minutes. He is playing an average of 16:34 per game.

Rasmus Kupari: Kupari’s tournament is done after sustaining a knee injury in his first game.

Lukas Parik: The goaltender played in two games for the Czech Republic, making saves on 44 out of 52 shots faced. He has a .846 save percentage and 6.17 goals against average. Parik was the starter for the Czech Republic’s final two games in the prelimnary round, where he faced the United States and Canada. The home team has been beset by injuries, playing increasingly shorthanded as the tournament has proceeded. Parik left the game against Canada after being injured on the play leading to Canada’s fourth goal. The severity of his injury has not been disclosed yet, but he did need help to get off the ice.

Aidan Dudas: Dudas has no points through four games. He has two penalty minutes, four shots on goal, is a -2, and is averaging 15:18 of ice time.

Akil Thomas: Thomas has one assist in the tournament. He has two shots on goal and has played an average of 14:14.

Alex Turcotte: Turcotte has two assists, two penalty minutes, and seven shots on goal. He’s a -1 and has played an average of 12:42.
