The Manchester Monarchs have had a bit of a heavy schedule the last couple weeks so we haven’t been able to provide timely updates about them while Adrian Kempe has returned to Sweden and last place Modo.
Modo Hockey
Despite his teammate William Nylander getting called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs, do not expect the same thing to happen with Kempe any time soon. It’s more likely the Los Angeles Kings will wait until Kempe’s SEL contract expires at the end of 2016.
Since returning from the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championships, Kempe has played in five games and his average time on ice has declined slightly to 16:58. Ice time fluctuates frequently and Modo recently fired their coach so with their best player halfway around the world, we’ll see what kind of role Kempe gets.

Berube missed a few games with a minor back injury, giving backup Patrik Bartosak a more expanded role on the team. Berube briefly returned to action on January 16 in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Worcester Sharks (San Jose Sharks) before being recalled due to Martin Jones’s back spasms.
Bartosak performed well in a 2-1 OT win over the Providence Bruins (Boston Bruins) on Saturday night, but couldn’t bail out his very undisciplined (three penalties in the first 10 minutes) team against a fairly potent Worcester offense. He was “alright” but the team probably could’ve used a solid Berube back there.
Without Shore to steal the spotlight, Weal looks like he’ll be the man in Manchester. This was finally supposed to be his year after being in Pearson’s and Toffoli’s shadows but he was usurped by the surprising Shore. Weal scored the GWG on Saturday as the Monarchs beat the Bruins in OT on LA Kings Night.
The Kings’ organization seems rather underwhelmed by Kitsyn as two players signed to PTOs were put into the lineup ahead of him. Sorry, Rudy.
Fancy Stats
The Monarchs are pretty neck and neck with the Sharks but have allowed 3 more shot attempts in 3 more games than Worcester. Without the red hot Shore, I’ll be curious to see if Monarchs can keep up these lofty possession numbers.

After a relatively heavy schedule early on, the Monarchs will have a lot of time off to rest and work on their systems. It doesn’t seem as though Jeff Schultz will be headed back to Manchester any time soon so they’re going to need to work hard on their defense.
