What to Watch
- The Red Wings only recently clawed themselves out of a 12-game losing streak. They’ve now put up conescitive wins over the Winnipeg Jets (5-2) and Montreal Canadiens (2-1). Robby Fabbri, Filip Hronek, and Filip Zadina each had three point nights against the Jets. Mike Green had a goal and an assist against the Canadiens.
- Since being acquired from St. Louis, Fabbri has recorded 15 points in 17 games for the Red Wings, including four multi-point games. Fabbri, who couldn’t quite crack the depth chart of the Blues or get back on track after multiple injuries, looks to finally be finding a home with Detroit, who can afford to let him have a longer leash on ice than the reigning Cup champs.
- With Detroit on the rebound, they’re not looking like quite as fragile a team as they were just a few short days ago. But still, they’re the only team in the league which hasn’t cracked 10 wins yet. The Red Wings score the fewest goals, on average, in the league, currently sitting at 2.18 goals per game (the Kings are only slightly ahead of them with 2.53 goals per game). Equally concerning for the Red Wings must be their failure to keep the puck out of their own net — with 3.85 goals against per game, on average, the Red Wings lead the league in goals against.
- The Red Wings have the worst penalty kill in the league. The Kings have the second-worst. Do the math on how well all the special teams work is going to go tonight.
- The Kings have managed to collect three points so far on the road, salvaging one last night after seeing a 2-0 lead evaporate. With both Detroit and Los Angeles playing on the back end of a back-to-back, and the Kings only doing minimal travel, both teams will be tired, possibly changing up their lineups, and most definitely just looking forward to the final. horn. This feels like a game the Kings should be able to win — but both teams have shown a surprising amount of resilience lately, so it’s a toss-up.
- With Jonathan Quick starting last night in Pittsburgh, expect hometown Michigan boy Jack Campbell to get the start tonight. If nothing else, the Kings should win this one for him. /
