As promised in the last post, I want to run through a bunch of head-to-heads…starting with the most fun (or “fun”): goaltending.
- Jonathan Quick, so far this year: 11-3-0, 27 goals-against.
- Quick, last year after 14 games: 9-3-2, 39 goals-against.
- Jonathan Bernier, so far this year: 2-5-0, 23 goals-against (3.28 GAA).
- Quick, first 7 games last year: 4-3-0, 24 goals-against (3.42 GAA).
- Erik Ersberg, first 7 games (slightly less than 6.5 gms) last year: 2-5-0, 20 goals-against (3.12 GAA).
- Goal support, this year: 65 goals through 21 games.
- Goal support, last year: 62 goals through 21 games.
- Goal support with Quick in net, last year (first 7 starts): avg 4.00 in 4 wins, 2.00 in 3 losses.
- Goal support with Bernier in net, this year (first 7 starts): avg 4.00 in 2 wins, 1.60 in five losses.
- Goal support with Ersberg in net, last year (first 6.5): avg 5.00 in 2 wins, 1.33 in five losses.
- Quick, in his first 7 starts last year, stole 2 games (winning 2-1 twice) and was bailed out twice (winning 6-3 and 4-3).
- Bernier, in his first 7 starts this year, hasn’t stolen any games, and was bailed out once (winning 4-3).
- Ersberg, in his first 7 starts, didn’t steal any games and was bailed out once (5-4 win).
- Record when the Kings scored exactly 3 goals in the game (sample is first seven games only): Ersberg 0-2, Quick (last year) 0-1, Bernier (this year) 0-1, Quick (this year) 1-0.
When the Kings score more than three goals, they win. When they score two or less, they lose. I wonder what the numbers look like when the Kings score exactly three goals in a game.
- Last year, with Quick in net, when the Kings scored exactly 3 goals, their record was 7-3-2. With Ersberg, 0-1-1. This year, with Quick in net, the Kings are 3-1. With Bernier, 1-1. /
I guess none of this is very surprising. There’s a reason that a GFA above 3 is considered good and a GAA above 3 is considered bad.
