Reign #FancyStats Recap: Ontario Hiccups, Mersch Keeps It Up

All scoring chance, Corsi, and faceoff counts are estimated.

This Friday, Ontario kicks off a swing through the Lone Star State with another tangle against the San Antonio Rampage, followed the next evening with their first-ever encounter with the Texas Stars.

11/11/15

The Reign sunk the Barracuda on Veterans Day, killing off a San Jose two-man advantage in the final minutes of a 2-1 nailbiter.

[Recap]

  • One point in nine games isn’t a lot for a guy who I tabbed for a “Colin Miller-like breakout” this season. But solid two-way shifts like thisNick Ebert pushes the offense, but not too hard, and then recovers for perfect defensive positioningwill help his cause to stay in the lineup. That, and more power play time, should contribute to an uptick in production.

  • It’s reasonable to wonder if such manuevers will fly in the NHL, but here’s more nimble work by Michael Mersch and a prime example of why he’s leading the AHL in shots on goal.

  • Nic Dowd took more than half the team’s faceoffs against San Jose! Nifty pass here too:

Ontario never really got going as they were shut out 3-0 by Laurent Brossoit and the Bakersfield Condors:

[Box Score]

  • This is an example of Ebert’s ceiling. Unfortunately, Valentin Zykov tags the post.

  • In the third period, Jonny Brodzinski was moved up to skate with Dowd and Mersch, and the trio put up a 10-1 Corsi. Brodzinski had been coming on. Earlier that night, he hit a post, and last Wednesday, he was a primary contributor in three scoring chances. This weekend, he gets a chance to start with Dowd and Mersch.
  • Joel Lowry’s professional career got off on the wrong foot, as his line (centered by Ryan Horvat and flanked by Scott Sabourin) surrendered a pair of goals on consecutive first period shifts.
