Toffoli edges out Kitsyn and Cizikas for OHL Player of the Week

Ottawa 67s Tyler Toffoli Named OHL Player of the Week
The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Tyler Toffoli of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Player of the Week for the second time this season. Toffoli, who was also recently named the OHL’s Player of the Month for December, scored four goals and five assists for nine points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5 for the week ending January 9. Toffoli led the 67’s to three straight wins[,] a four-point game on Sunday […], three assists as part of a 4-3 road win over the Peterborough Petes [and] a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win Friday against the Petes […] in Ottawa. Toffoli, an 18-year-old from Scarborough, ON, is playing in his third OHL season […]. He currently leads the OHL in scoring with 38 goals and 37 assists for 75 points in 41 games and is […] on a 23-game point streak which includes six-straight multi-point games. […] Also considered for the award [were] Casey Cizikas and Maxim Kitsyn. Cizikas scored four goals and two assists for six points in two games, while Kitsyn scored three goals and two assists for five points in his first two career OHL games.

That’s player of the week twice, player of the month once, leading the league in scoring, 23 consecutive games points streak, and he’s 18.

Glad we traded up to get him. I forget why he wasn’t a first round pick. I looked in my archive of clippings and couldn’t find anything, but here are some tidbits:

  • Over a 47-game span in 2009-10, Toffoli averaged more than a point and a half per-game — only three of the top 10 scorers in the OHL averaged more: Taylor Hall (No. 2 ranked), Tyler Seguin (No. 1 ranked) and Nazem Kadri (selected 7th overall in 2009). He has consistently produced in the playoffs as well, recording 21 points (9-12-21) in 19 career playoff games.
