The Los Angeles Kings completed a headline-grabbing deal Friday afternoon. GM Dean Lombardi sent backup goalie Martin Jones, defensive prospect Colin Miller, and the 13th overall draft pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Milan Lucic.
In Lucic, the Kings are acquiring a rugged left winger known more for his ability to hit and fight than he is for his ability to score goals. With that said, the 27-year old forward is coming off of a season in which he picked up 18 goals and 26 assists.
Lucic has just one year left on his contract, but he does carry a hefty $6m cap hit.
[UPDATE: The Bruins are retaining $2.7 million of salary, so Lucic will cost $3.3m next season.]
Originally born in Vancouver, Lucic has spent his entire professional career as a member of the Boston Bruins organization. He was a central figure in Boston’s 2011 Stanley Cup victory.
Martin Jones has spent the last two seasons playing backup to Jonathan Quick. After winning the first 8 starts of his career, Jones has seen little action between the pipes for the Kings. However, when called upon, he has played very well. In his abbreviated NHL career, Jones boasts a .923 SV%.
Colin Miller was drafted in the 5th round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, but has made steady progress since arriving in the Kings organization. He’s coming off a 19 goal, 33 assist campaign with the Manchester Monarchs, and he added an addition 10 points in their run to the Calder Cup championship.
