It started off frustrating, but the Kings rallied.
Down 2-0 to start the 3rd period, the Kings turned to their veterans. Jeff Carter opened the scoring under a minute into the period. Then, with just a shade under six minutes remaining in regulation, Marian Gaborik scored the game-tying goal following a slick pass by Anze Kopitar.
3-on-3 overtime lived up to its lofty hype. The league’s most successful teams traded chances until Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik connected again. Kopi found Gaborik in space to set up a breakaway. Unlike Jonathan Toews at the tail-end of regulation, Gaborik converted his breakaway into a game-winning goal to give the Kings a very cathartic victory.
The Kings played a very good game from start to finish, despite falling behind on the scoreboard. Hard to find fault with any of the team’s players tonight, and the result rewarded the effort.
